The Ultimate Staple Gun Review

I aim to review the best of the best when it comes to staple guns in this article. We’re going to be looking at all types from all angles. Pressure, comfort, the package it comes in, trigger design, warranty, and more all play a part in my decision-making.

Even whether or not the tool can take the standard Arrow or Stanley T50 staples play a part in whether I like each gun. If you want some help deciding on a staple gun to buy, then read on.

Pros
  • Out of all the staplers I've seen, this is the best item to use for DIY work.
  • The air compressor means that there's no oil or maintenance to be done on the tool. You'll still have to make sure you're still looking after it, though.
  • The heavy-duty staples that the stapler fires are great for stapling a wide range of different materials that other staplers can't.
  • It sits relatively comfortably in your hand.
  • It doesn't take much effort at all to control this gun.
  • This is pretty lightweight compared to the weight of other staple models.
Cons
  • It's got a heavier price tag than most of the item options on this list.
  • The staples don't load properly sometimes, which is a major annoyance when you're mid stapling.
  • There have been reports of the safety plunger being prone to breaking. The housing itself is fine, though.
  • No refill window is a shame.

Sometimes a manual staple gun just isn’t going to do the job. For situations like that, you want to purchase something with a bit more oomph. That’s what this BOSTITCH heavy duty staple gun is known for.

BOSTITCH Crown Stapler

It runs off of an air compressor, meaning you can take on bigger projects than you can with a manual stapler gun. Just make sure you keep your hands clear when you’re stapling. All it takes is a slip, and you’re practically going to be nailed to the wall along with anything that you’re working with.

Given that it’s got a higher cost and better tech compared to manual staple guns, the BOSTITCH Crown Stapler comes with a few features that you would expect from some other type of power tool.

It has tool-free depth adjustment and a comfortable grip that is surprisingly ergonomic. It’s been built with comfort in mind, and the ease of access to the trigger reflects that. More importantly, though, you can switch the piece between sequential fire and contact fire.

Aside from that, the item comes with a carrying case and a belt clip. You don’t get any BOSTITCH Crown staples, so you’ll have to buy some yourself.

BOSTITCH Crown Stapler

The stapler makes use of 18-gauge staples between half an inch to 1 1/2 inches. BOSTITCH Crown staples are a great choice, but as long as the staple is in that size range, then you should be fine.

The BOSTITCH Crown Staple Gun is at Home in the Workshop

If you’re a DIYer full of ideas in need of some staple guns, this tool is the perfect addition to your collection. It’s a great upholstery staple gun for accessories but has a high operation on other, bigger requirements.

The staples that it fires are better than most others, making this a great choice for the home DIY pro.

Stanley Staple Gun Tr110

Stanley is a household name in high-quality tools and equipment. Pieces of kit like this staple gun are exactly why.

It’s a manual gun, meaning there’s no charging it. There also isn’t any form of air compressor. It’s as simple as staplers get.

Don’t let that turn you off, though. The high-quality steel construction that this stapler is made up of is durable and packs some serious punch. You don’t want your hand getting in the way of the stapler and the wall, put it that way.

In terms of functionality, the stapler comes with a handle lock, a bottom load channel to make loading up your TRA200 staples easier, and a sleek design that lets you get the stapler into all of those hard to reach places.

Given that it’s not an electric staple gun or an air compressor, you’re only going to want to use this tool on light wood, furniture, and the like.

Stanley Staple Gun Tr110

A particular drawback I found with this stapler is that despite the sleek design, the handle and body are way too far apart. There’s not much in terms of comfort with this trigger design. If you’ve got smallish hands, you might want to consider the other staplers on this list.

Stanley TR110 – For Around the House

If you’re looking for the single best staple gun, this isn’t it. Likewise, if you’re looking for a heavy-duty staple gun for home projects, this also isn’t it.

However, if you’re looking to purchase a manual staple gun to throw in the cabinet so that it’s there when you want it, this is your best option. It’s a cheap and well-built tool to have for odd jobs that pop up every now and again.

Pros
  • The contour of the grip fits in your hand rather well, offers a high level of comfort, and makes it easy to reach the trigger.
  • The driving power you have on this staple gun is absolutely insane, making it perfect for construction. It takes all the effort away from your muscles thanks to the pressure and control it delivers.
  • The efficiency of this gun is something I should note. I've had no issues with it whatsoever whether I'm shooting through junk plastic or woodworking with hard oak.
  • You have a choice of staple size models of 1/2, 9/16, and 5/8 inches.
  • It has a viewing window for reloading.
  • It has a super affordable price tag despite how powerful it is.
  • The Hi-Lo switch that the product comes with is a major benefit.
  • It's got a low weight for easy use.
  • The power of it shows that it can tackle whatever tasks and surface material you throw at it. Whether it's house decorations or any number of wood types, this staple can do both.
Cons
  • There isn't much of a safety mechanism to talk about.
  • It could do with a better rubber grip.
  • It's corded, which is an annoyance associated with a lot of electric staple guns.
  • Users have reported the gun randomly dying, but I've yet to see that for myself.
  • There's no belt hook.

Stanley TRE550Z

The TRE550Z is an electric stapler that is perfect for both light household projects, as well as heavy-duty construction work. The staple size and power of this gun allow it to perform with all but the hardest hardwoods.

It comes with a Hi-Lo switch that allows you to change the power you need depending on the jobs you’re doing. You have the choice of lightwood and hardwood work with this product, which is more than I can say for a lot of other staplers.

It has a contoured grip that finds in your hands nicely, but it’s not as comfortable as some of the other rubber grip handles used on other styles of staple guns. It does have a flat nose design, though, meaning you can maneuver the product into all of those nooks and crannies while you’re working on all types of jobs. It’s a great bit of help to have every day on the site.

The TRE550Z – The One Gun to Rule Them All

The TRE550Z is among the best tools on this list. Don’t let the size of the staple gun fool you; this thing packs enough power to fit right at home on a construction site.

Stanley TRE550Z

While users have reported issues with the electronics in the gun, these reports see, scattered and far between. Plus, the gun comes with a lifetime warranty in case that does happen.

This staple gun comes from one of the most widely used brands in the world. This is a brad nailer and a staple gun all in one, making it ideal for construction work and home project work. It whether you want to fire a staple or spray nails, add this one to your shopping list.

Makita XTS01Z

Makita is one of those companies known for making tools that can actually get the job done. Models like this are exactly why. The XTS01Z is pricy, don’t get me wrong, but the tech you’re getting makes up for that problem.

Makita DST221Z

The staple gun is fully cordless and powered by Makita’s Lithium-ion technology. In other words, you’re going to be firing staples more often, in more places, for longer. How much longer? Well, Makita’s batteries deliver 50% more runtime compared to the other industry leaders. These batteries also charge three times faster.

However, and it’s a big however, you need to buy the batteries separately. Even getting one in the box would have been nice, but I did say that this had a pretty penny attached to it.

With that being said, the staple gun is made from good material, including the rubber grip, which is more comfortable than most. It can get through almost any material you find yourself working with, especially around the house.

You’re not going to be getting through steel with this model, though, no matter what staples you use. Therefore, if it’s construction materials you’re working with, consider something a little heavier.

The Makita XTS01Z is Furnished for Furniture

Makita DST221Z

If you commonly work with furniture or accessories, either casually or professionally, then this staple gun is going to be perfect for you. It can handle most materials you’re going to find in a household but don’t plan on bringing it out to a construction site.

ROBERTS 10-600

VALUE FOR MONEY
Let’s get real for a second. Forget about all that lightweight upholstery and materials that are as dense as cardboard. If you need a real electric staple gun that can pack a punch through material from plywood, to oak, to carpet, then the ROBERTS 10-600 is for you.

Excellent

This electric stapler is also a 120v model. In other words, people in Europe don’t even have the option of using it.

Pros
  • The body of this heavy-duty gun is sturdy and durable.
  • An ergonomic design means your hand and arm don't get tired as often.
  • The power of this electric staple gun is enough to get through carpet to sheets of plywood.
  • There are a variety of different ways to use this gun, which means there are no tasks or problems that it can't tackle.
  • This electric staple gun offers top of the range performance. It's a viable alternative to pricier brands out there like DEWALT.
  • This system is particularly well suited to insulation floor projects.
  • The power cord is 12-foot long. This isn't an issue, but it's not any sort of major benefit, either. Personally, though, I'm not a fan of long wires, especially in a professional environment.
Cons
  • There's no viewing window for when you're reloading.
  • One of the major considerations to keep in mind is that you need to only use a certain type of staple in this gun. The lack of range is a major issue for me.
  • Money-wise, this is more expensive than a lot of electric staplers, but you don't need to take out a second mortgage to get one.

Let’s get real for a second. Forget about all that lightweight upholstery and materials that are as dense as cardboard. If you need a real electric staple gun that can pack a punch through material from plywood, to oak, to carpet, then the ROBERTS 10-600 is for you.

ROBERTS 10-600

This is a professional electric staple gun, but despite that, it costs a fraction of the Makita. Being the owner of this unit means you’re ready for all projects, no matter how big or small.

If we’re talking about the design of the unit, it’s pretty ergonomic. It’s nothing outstanding, but it certainly gets the job done. It also has a nice contrasting red and silver color scheme, although that doesn’t come into my rating of it.

The stapler comes with a longer than average 12-foot cord. Most brand models that I’ve seen feature a standard eight-foot, so I’m not sure why ROBERTS decided to switch things up. It’s not a negative by any means; it’s just an unusual addition.

There is a major downside to this stapler, though, and that’s the fact that it doesn’t deal in multiple sizes of staples. Whoever in the ROBERTS office decided that was okay should be fired. People and projects have different requirements, and often those needs are subject to availability. Thus, if the staple sizes you need for this stapler are out of stock, then thought luck.

ROBERTS 10-600

I don’t know why ROBERTS didn’t release a follow-up version is beyond me, but it’s a massive missed opportunity.

This electric stapler is also a 120v model. In other words, people in Europe don’t even have the option of using it. It could pack as much power as a truck, but that doesn’t matter if you limit your target market that much.

The ROBERTS 10-660 is for a Picky Professional

The single type of staple requirement is a major issue for me, but that doesn’t change the fact this is a great tool. It can perform on almost any type of surface, from everyday things like upholstery to hardwoods.

It’s particularly good for floor usage, meaning carpet repairs and the like. That’s not to say that its only use is in that industry, but it’s an area of expertise.

Buyer’s Guide

Okay, those are my five favorites, but you might not be a fan of my opinion. That’s fine; these recommendations are more tips than rules. If you don’t like the staple guns that I do, then feel free to go shopping for one yourself.

I don’t want you to walk away from here empty-handed, though, so I’ve put together a little guide highlighting what information I look at when I’m looking at different staple guns to help you make your own mind up.

There’s also an FAQ at the bottom, so if there’s one piece of info you’re after, you might find it down there.

Variety is the Spice of Life

There are three different types of staple guns to be aware of: manual, electric, and pneumatic. Depending on whether you’re going to be using it every day, and what for, each gun type brings a different value to the table.

The benefits range from ease of use to features built for professionals. Therefore, before you buy, you need to sit down and think about what it is you need from your package.

If you’re only going to be working with surfaces that are thin and frail, then you don’t require an electric staple gun built for professionals. However, if you’re working with heavier surfaces, then you might.

Define your needs before you start shopping, and you shouldn’t have too much trouble.

Versatility is King

For homeowners, DIYers, and professionals alike, versatility is king when it comes to staple guns. Power and ease mean nothing if you can only use the gun in one situation.

Most companies have staple guns that are a great jack of all trades, so keep an eye out for those models. There’s a place for a staple gun in almost every household regardless of whether you’re running a business or you’ve got DIYers under the roof.

Having on there can even help with trivial issues like putting up decorations. The number of applications that these guns have is varied, hence why versatility is so important.

Hardwood Decision

If you’re working with stuff like baseboards, you’re going to have to consider the strength of the electric staple hun you’re using. Taking Crown nails is only the start of heavy-duty work; it needs to have the power to back that up as well as rapid firing.

Performance and precision are important to a professional. You’re not going to be stapling through paper, after all. Thus, make sure you’re only looking at high powered staple guns.

The Cable, The Outlet, and Anything In-Between

Some electric staple guns are cordless. A few are not. If you can get yourself a cordless model, do. You can use it anywhere at any time and still get high-quality performance.

If you can’t get a cordless model, make sure the ones you’re looking at have at least eight feet of wire. Anything less than that and you’re going to struggle if you’re working in a professional setting.

Sizes, Durability, Force, and Duty

For the most part, the majority of stable guns have good durability for heavy-duty, high-force projects. Not all of them do, though. You might need to use the gun for something a little heavier than lightweight upholstery jobs, in which case you want a weight and material that can take a beating.

The more jobs you do, the stronger the gun needs to be. You don’t want the casing or the mechanism to give out after a few uses. You need to have the pressure needed to achieve the depth you’re looking for in every task.

The price of the times you’re buying is generally going to dictate the quality of the parts. Thus, if you have heavy-duty tasks that need to be done, you’re going to have to add to that budget.

We Have to Talk About Price

I don’t like it any more than you do, but it’s my duty to call attention to the price of these staple guns. Before you purchase, use, or even look at a task, you need to see what price you’re working with. Electric staple guns can range in price massively. Lightweight upholstery guns aren’t going to cost as much as professional units, and vice versa.

The more complicated the styles and mechanism, the more you have to pay. These items are still considered a tool, so the price reflects that. Even if you’re getting an online delivery rather than buying one in-store, it’s still going to cost.

Not only that, but you need to remember you’re going to be buying hundreds of staples. These staples are not cheap, even for light-duty manual staple guns.

Users and Issues

You should be looking at the reviews of any product before you buy, which I assume is why you’re here. Don’t just take my word on what works and what doesn’t, though.

There might be reports of a jam issue that I missed or a variety of circumstances that the gun is no good for.

Anyone and everyone who uses a staple gun have different purposes for it, whether it be for roofing, softwood, carpentry, stability, or just general convenience. That means that people are going to have different experiences and issues. No two reviews are the same, so need as many as you can.

FAQs

What is the best staple gun to buy?

There’s no say there is one single model for all of your stapler needs. If you’re using a gun for upholstery, wood, or carpet, you’re going to need a different type. In general, an electric staple gun is going to suit most needs with the exception of super heavy-duty requirements. In that case, you might need to get more specialized with your equipment.

You can get a good gun for around $30 to take care of most regular needs, so don’t worry about dishing out a phenomenal amount of money for one.

What is a Pneumatic Staple Gun?

A pneumatic staple gun runs off of an air pressure mechanism. Pneumatic staple guns generally have higher firing power and don’t require any sort of battery. However, these guns are generally more expensive and less diverse in what options you have.

Can a Brad Nailer Shoot Staples?

Generally speaking, no. A brad nailer isn’t going to be able to shoot staples. However, there are plenty of staple guns that can shoot brad nails.

What are T50 Staples?

T50 staples are the best selling heavy staples in the world. Arrow manufacturers the T50, and most staple guns take them. There are T50 alternatives out there like the Stanley TRA200, but these are the most popular.

Safety Warning

Just because it’s a stapler doesn’t mean that it’s not dangerous. These products have serious firing power and can injure or even kill you if you mess with them. It’s not a toy, so don’t treat it like a toy. Lock it up in its toolbox when you’re not using it. You need to keep it well out of the reach of children, regardless of what mechanism the gun uses.

A manual stapler isn’t going to do as much damage at home as an electric gun can, but you still need to keep it safe. Your children stapling their hands is the least of the worries when they can take their eye out.

Samples aren’t nails, but the sizes and design can often be the same. Remember, these guns have a design intended for use on heavy projects. Even a lightweight upholstery eclectic staple gun can do damage, so make sure you’re doing your part to keep it safe.
