How to Make a Router Fence

Fortunately, there are several easy ways to make a router fence. For your convenience, I’ve listed the main materials you’ll need: Split fence, T-bolts, Brass washers, and 1/4-20 T-track. But don’t stop there! I’ve also provided a video tutorial to help you get started. Follow these steps to create your own router fence and protect your woodworking project!

Split fence

In this article, Rob Brown, editor of Canadian Woodworking Magazine, shows how to split a router fence. You’ll also learn how to make a router table. The process is a breeze, and you’ll end up with a router table that you can use right away. But before you start splitting fences, it’s important to understand the difference between the two. You should always consider your specific needs, and choose the correct materials based on these.

To split a router fence, first make sure your router table has a chamfer that matches the size of the material you’re removing. By chamfering the leading edge of the fence, you can make feeding easier. Then, raise or lower the fence corresponding to the amount of material you’re removing. A jointer is a similar machine. Using a router table and split fence can be a big help in achieving this.

If your router table doesn’t come with a fence, you can purchase one that’s already split for you. In either case, you’ll need two slots in the base and four slots for the split fence. All slots must be 1/4-inch wide. Make sure to drill the reinforcing holes for the fence. Then, you’ll be ready to split the fence and begin routing. So, how to split a router fence?

When building your router table, you’ll want to build the router fence as high as the bit you’re going to use. You’ll need plywood for this project, and a straightedge. Luckily, the router fence includes a step-by-step building plan. It’s worth a look if you’re a woodworker or just want to make a router fence to protect your table.

T-bolts

If you have a table saw and you want to create a router fence, you can use T-bolts. They have an oval flat head and are designed for use with 3/4″ x 3/8″ t-slotted miter slots, which are commonly found on table saws. But if you want to build a router fence from scratch, you can buy T-tracks and attach nuts to the top of the track.

Fortunately, there are several different designs of T-tracks that are compatible with your router. Most T-tracks and their accessories can be used on any table saw and are also compatible with other track systems. They are especially helpful for table saws, where they can be used as feather boards and hold-down clamps. This project can be completed quickly and easily with a simple set of T-bolts and a few bits of hardware.

Using a straight bit instead of a T-slot bit will reduce the amount of work needed on a t-slot bit. You can also use a dado blade to cut a slot in a table saw. This will save you the expense of buying multiple t-slot bits. Once you’ve made your router fence, you can put it to use and start using it!

Brass washers

If you’ve ever tried to make a router fence, you know how frustrating it can be to get a lousy one. Store-bought fences do the job, but they often fall short in height. Two or three inches is not nearly enough to protect tall work. This method will provide the necessary height for a router fence and make the entire process much quicker. But how do you make one?

First, determine the diameter of your router bit. If it’s larger than the router’s cutter width, you’ll need a wider router fence. This will help you ensure that the fence stays centered and parallel to the router’s blade. Next, install the fence mount by positioning it on the Clamp Block. You’ll need two 1/4–20 x 3/8″ Phillips Pan Head Machine Screws to secure it.

A table-mounted router is better equipped to handle long strips and large bits. A router fence gives you more flexibility in shaping the edge and height of the cutter without the help of a bearing guide. Moreover, a router fence allows you to cut a variety of profiles from one bit. But if you have a larger table-mounted router, you’ll need a smaller router fence. And for table-top routers, you’ll also need an auxiliary fence. You can purchase one online.

The back of the fence should also be attached to the base. Attach the back with glue, brads, and 1-1/2″ countersunk wood screws. It’s crucial to secure the fence at a 90-degree angle. A good practice is to use a felt-tip marker to mark the location of the guard pins. You can also place a gauge over the fence. If you’re using a two-piece rail-and-stile router, use the fence gauge to make sure that your fence is parallel to the miter slot.

1/4-20 T-track

If you want to build your own router fence, you need some hardware. The t-bolts you will need are made from zinc-plated, hardened steel, and have 1/4″-20 all threads. They measure 13/16″ wide x 17/32″ long. You will need to use a universal or larger T-track to install these t-bolts.

Depending on the orientation of your track, you will want to use a dado that will take up 99% of the work. The screws used to fasten the track are small and widely spaced. If you are using t-track, use screws that are smaller than a toilet bowl flange. These don’t catch on the screws, and they will slide through the track easier.

Spacer bars

To make a router fence, you need spacer bars. You need a piece of plywood that’s a diameter of the baseplate of the router. You need to place this piece parallel to the edges of the router baseplate. Then, attach the movable fence to the spacer. You must mark the slots on the crossbars. The center of the machine screw will be marked on the slot furthest from the fixed fence. Then, drill a hole at least one-and-a-half inches deep. After drilling the holes, you must countersink the bottom of each crossbar.

Once you’ve installed the spacer bars, you can add your router fence. You can even make spacer bars from hard hoard or plywood. These can help set the fence depth of your movable fence, and they’re handy for making cuts of common widths. Spacer bars can be made custom-sized or proportionately shaped to fit the baseplate. If you need a large offset, you can create a spacer bar that is 1/2″ in diameter.

If you don’t have a movable router fence, you can use a double-bar guide. These guides can help you achieve a wide dado. For this, you’ll need to place a fixed-base router with the “zero” side against the fence. You can also use a straight bit for cutting a wide dado. You’ll need an inch between the bit and the fence. A router fence can be as large or small as you want it to be.

After assembling your baseplate, you should mount the blank on the router and mark it with a center-to-center measurement. Then, you can install the blank and the spacer on the router. When you turn the router, you can reference the different spots with the fence. Cut to arc using a band saw or saber saw. After that, you need to sand it smooth.
