How to Apply Veneer

If you are looking for a beautiful and durable finish for your home, you might be wondering how to apply veneer. Fortunately, this project can be easy if you follow the right steps. First, you should decide on the type of veneer you want to use. Many commercial woodworking shops use phenolic or paper-backed varieties. In this article, we will discuss how to apply veneer and explain how to prepare a substrate for veneer.

Veneer can be bought in two different types: book-matched and regular. When you purchase book-matched veneer, you will receive pieces that are cut next to each other. This will give you the opportunity to create a beautiful design on the veneer. On the other hand, unmatched and regular styles may be more natural. Whether you choose the book-matched or unmatched, the application method will depend on your preference. If you’re going to use regular veneer, you will need to carefully prepare the surface area and cut it to the desired size. Afterwards, you can trim the edges of the veneer with a razor blade.

After cutting the veneer, you’ll need to lay it flat on the surface where it will be placed. Make sure to leave a little overhang to avoid cracking. When placing veneer over a wall, you need to leave about 1/4″ overhang, as overhanging can lead to cracking. For a smooth finish, use contact cement. The adhesive should be applied using a short-nap roller, rolling the surface first in one direction and then in the other.

Once you’ve cut the veneer to the proper size, you can lay it flat on the surface. Once the adhesive has dried, you can start applying the veneer. Remember to place a piece of release paper at the top of the work surface, so that you don’t overdo it. Once you’ve laid it flat on the surface, you can remove it. To make the glue stick well, you can smooth it out with your finger.

Once you’ve cut the veneer to the correct size, you can start applying it to the surface. You should line the edges of the veneer with the edges of the substrate. This will help you ensure that they are evenly spaced. In order to make a veneer look perfect, it’s important to align the edges with each other. When you’ve done that, you’ll be able to press the veneer into place.

This will help you to prevent any mistakes during the process of applying the veneer. Once the veneer is centered, it’s time to apply the contact cement. You must remove the release paper and then peel off the backing. After applying the contact cement, remove the release paper, the veneer must be smoothed with the contact cement.
